On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman. Starring Noémie Merlant (Tar, Paris 13th District) and winner of innumerable Cesar awards, Adèle Haenel, the film is a beatiful, almost timeless study of power and passion in which the observed, becomes the observer.
Written and directed by Celine Sciamma, it was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2019 where it won the Queer Palm, becoming the first film directed by a woman to win the award, Sciamma also won the award for best screenplay at Cannes.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire was voted the 30th greatest film of all time in the Sight & Sound 2022 critics’ poll.
