Shoplifters is a 2018 Japanese film directed, written and edited by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Like Father, Like Son, Our Little Sister, After the Storm, Broker & Monster). Starring Lily Franky (Like Father, Like Son), Sakura Ando (Monster, Godzilla Minus One) and Kirin Kiki (After the Strom, Sweet Bean), it tells the story of a family which relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty.

Kore-eda wrote the screenplay contemplating what makes a family, and inspired by reports on poverty and shoplifting in Japan.

Shoplifters premiered in 2018 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or, the film was released in Japan the same year and was a critical and commercial success. Shoplifters was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the BAFTAs, Oscars and the Golden Globe awards.
